Unsung Treasures Honoree Nan Barnwell was born in Middlesex County, Virginia to the late Roland and Sara Kidd. She received her early education in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, and returned to Virginia, where she graduated from Middlesex High School.
Nan moved to Washington DC and worked as a payroll clerk for the Morton Department Stores.
She married Harold Barnwell and had two children, Bonita and Harold, Jr. Harold's job took them Beaugency, France and they lived there for six years. Their family returned to the United States where their youngest son André was born. The family moved to Yeadon in 1963. all three of the Barnwell children Bonita, Harold, Jr., and André graduated from Yeadon High School, and three went to college. Harold, Sr. retired after serving 31 years in the Army, and became Chief of Security Guards at Cheyney State College. He was killed by a drunk driver as he was driving home from work.
Mrs. Barnwell graduated from Delaware County Community College with honors, where she taught at the nursery school. She graduated from Antioch University with honors, and also took courses at Temple University, Cheyney State College, and Saint Joseph's University, among others.
Mrs. Barnwell taught in the William Penn School District at Walnut School, East Alden, East Lansdowne, and Lansdowne schools. She retired from the William Penn School District and became active in the community of Yeadon.
